However, in the recent past I acquired a copy of Redline (ВЈ3 well spent!) and gave it a whirl just out of curiosity and I can honestly say that while many sites simply label Redline Racer as the Japanese version of Suzuki Alstare, in truth they couldn't be more different.

I was aware of the connection to Redline Racer, but never really paid much attention to the Japanese ancestor because I always just assumed it was the same game without the Suzuki license and thought nothing more of it. Sure, the visuals haven't aged well and the handling model is fairly rudimentary when compared to more contemporary motorcycle racers like Moto GP et al, but as a simplistic arcade jaunt there are worse titles out there. I also remember thinking it was a fairly decent, nice looking racer and to this day I still don't think there's anything particularly offensive about it. Thinking back, Suzuki was one of the first titles I experienced on the Dreamcast and I clearly recall renting it from Blockbuster when the price of a new game of my own was something way out of my price range.

When Redline Racer was released in North America and PAL regions the following year, it came with official branding and a new name: Suzuki Alstare Extreme Racing.

Developed by Criterion (yes, the same Criterion behind the Burnout series) the game initially launched for PC where it received average reviews, and a few months later in April 1999 it hit Japanese Dreamcasts to a similarly lukewarm reception. In the upper right you will notice your current position as well as lap number.Redline Racer was a very early release for the Dreamcast and was little more than a technical showcase for the hardware. The remaining time will be displayed in the top-center of the screen. In the upper left-hand side of the screen you will find the course map detailing the position of the competitors as well as the course layout. The turbo feature allows your racer to make up time by adding extra speed to your bike. Once again, all bikes and tracks available in the Main Game mode will be available here.Дuring all races, passing a checkpoint will not only increase your allotted time but add a bit of turbo fuel to your gas tank. This option gives the trailing racer an extra boost. Once in this mode an option for handicap becomes available. In the Two-player mode it is possible to race against a human opponent via a split screen. The top five all-time records are saved on the VMU, taking up very little space. After picking the course and bike desired, it is also possible to select the desired number of competing computer racers.

Any bike or track that has been acquired in the Main Game mode is available for selection in the Single Race mode. The Single Race mode is offered to those who wish to break time records on any of the existing tracks. This leaves a total of nine sections you must complete in order to win the game. Each section consists of three to five races, and there are three sections per level, three levels in all. One inside you will be able to save your progress after each section. When the bike is configured it's time to begin your career. Bike settings can be balanced between power, speed, and braking. Before each race the user has the option of choosing between three uniforms as well as the ability to customize their bike settings. In all there are 12 tracks, each of which can be raced backwards after the game has been completed. The Main Game mode will put the competitor into a career-like setting that rewards the gamer with new tracks and bikes as the game progresses. There is also an option to customize controller settings to your liking. Once starting the game there are three main modes at which you can play and an options screen that allows you to toggle background sound and sound effects on or off. The difference between this title and most of their other racers is the simple fact that there are motorcycles rather than cars competing for the fastest time. Suzuki Alstare Extreme Racing is brought to us by Ubisoft and is the third Dreamcast racer from the company.
